Freedom Butterfly

Supporting the Freedom Project by the Dogs Trust

Bowjangle Freedom Butterfly

Dogs Trust Freedom Project is a dog fostering service for people fleeing domestic abuse and going into refuge.

The Freedom Butterfly raises awareness and funds for the Freedom Project.

Pet owners fleeing domestic abuse are often unable to take their dogs into a refuge, leaving them unable to leave their homes, until they have somewhere safe for their pets too.

Dogs Trust offer a solution by providing free and confidential foster care, enabling the owner to flee, safe in the knowledge that their dog will be loved and cared for until they can be reunited.

The Facts

  • Almost nine in ten professionals working in the domestic abuse sector have seen cases where a pet has also been abused.
  • Almost half (49%) of professionals working in the sector are aware of domestic abuse cases where the pet has been killed.
  • In addition to the physical abuse that pets may suffer, 97% of professionals said they are also often used as a means of controlling someone experiencing domestic abuse.
  • More than nine in ten professionals (95%) also said that some survivors will not leave their homes without knowing their pet would be safe.
  • Before Lockdown, 100 calls every hour were recorded in England and Wales.  In 2017/18 60,000 cases of domestic abuse were recorded in Scotland alone, and on average 2 women are killed by their partner or ex-partner each week in England and Wales.  Lockdown due to Covid-19 has exacerbated these statistics and continues to do so.

Since 2004, the Freedom Project has helped over 1,100 people to flee domestic abuse by fostering 1,400 dogs.

When we learnt about the Freedom Project, we decided to make a handmade butterfly that fits onto a dog collar to increase awareness of this project for victims of abuse and to encourage people to become dog foster carers.

25% of the total selling price* of each Freedom Butterfly is donated to the Dogs Trust Freedom Project.

*This equates to the profit from the sale of a Freedom Butterfly.

Why a Yellow and Black Butterfly?

Butterflies symbolise hope and transformation.  Seeing a yellow and black butterfly is often a sign of being at a crossroads in your life.

Yellow represents energy, optimism, and joy. Yellow butterflies can be found in all shapes and sizes around the world. They often have black stripes or designs on their wings but are rarely all yellow.

Yellow and black are also the Dogs Trust colours, and our choice for the Freedom Butterfly.
